Internship Announcement

Background: Founded in 1979, Family Equality Council is the national organization exclusively dedicated to securing justice and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) parents and their children by advancing social justice for all families. We work to achieve social and legal equality for LGBT families by providing direct support, educating the American public, and advancing policy reform that ensures full recognition and protection under the law.

Position Summary: Family Equality Council is seeking an intern for the 2009-2010 academic year in our St. Paul, Minnesota office for a minimum of 10 hours per week. The internship is in the Department of Public Policy and Community Engagement, which provides direct support to LGBT families, builds their capacity to engage in the legal and institutional reform process, and leverages their stories to set and advance a proactive policy agenda for family creation and recognition, family-inclusive education reform, and family-inclusive discrimination and safety reform.

The intern will work on a variety of projects and tasks to support the goals of the Public Policy and Community Engagement department, including:

• Producing high quality publications, training curricula, and other educational materials
• Community outreach via phone, email and social media
• Event support
• Administrative and other duties as assigned

Qualifications include:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Attention to detail
• Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork, while also able to work independently
• Ability to complete projects in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Interest in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues

This is an unpaid internship. College credit may be available depending on the requirements of your college or university
