Street: 8th and Nicollet
City/Town: Minneapolis, MN

Holidazzle is upon us — which means big crowds — which means a chance to make an impact! JTI has called for a “Light Up The Night” event in cities across the country. We will be holding a Candlelight Vigil during the Holidazzle parade at 8th and Nicollet, outside of the IDS Center.

Meet in the Crystal Court at 5:30 to make an extra T-shirt and/or run off some handout leaflets at Kinko’s inside. The parade starts at 6:30 so just after 6, we should move outside to regroup on the steps and then proceed to hold the vigil on the corner in view of the crowd on Nicollet Mall. We should start our vigil a bit before the parade for best effect. We will stay until the parade is over or until we get cold, whichever is first.

Things To Bring:

  • Candles. either real or fake (battery-op preferred for safety and in case there is wind!) Target sells votive 6-packs in seasonals for $12, for example. Batteries included.
  • White T-Shirts. Size XXL, with text or sign reading “Second Class Citizen” or similar as you are comfortable wearing. (Allies, “My friend/brother/cousin/mailman is…” would be grand). This should be big enough to fit over your coat! Bring one along to make extras on site starting at 5:30, inside IDS Crystal Court. Kinko’s is next door for supplies. If everyone has a t-shirt, we are easily identifiable against the crowd. Although feel free to go incognito if you want to go for hot chocolate.
  • Leaflet Flyers. since this is a SILENT vigil we should have flyers available for those who ask what we are doing there. We will print some of these, but if you want to make some more you can print them at Kinko’s next door.
  • Peaceful Intentions. There will be families and holiday revelers around, so we want to make a statement without making trouble. We do NOT endorse running out into the parade for example… plus, the point is to be conspicuous, but not ridiculous. Please leave pickets at home but keep them ready for January 10!

We recommend arriving by public transit in order to avoid parking difficulties and to be mindful of our environment.
