On Being a Mugging Target

MinnPost editor Casey Selix tells the story of being mugged right outside Merlin’s Rest on Sunday, November 2.

Besides my horrible fantasies of being unable to vote on Election Day due to critical injury, what scares me about this is that it was unexpected. That’s a relatively “safe” part of town. I like to think that I’m street smart and have a modicum of that “don’t fuck with me” aura about me. Part of it comes from being raised in a city. Part of it, frankly, is because I have this notion that my being/appearing to be black somehow makes me less of a target because I somehow seem less vulnerable.

Tell me if that’s way off base or completely fucked up thinking. I’m sure the reason why this hasn’t happened to me is partly that I am self-aware and take precautions, partly that I’m just lucky, and partly the odds.
